When I read this about forty years ago, it was seminal for me. It really affected my view of myself and American society. Now it seems rather dated and excessively Freudian. I don't know that I believe in the existence of "unconscious repression," though it's a staple of many psychologies. This book is very readable and held my interest despite some disappointment.

These days I'm pushing Seymour Epstein's Cognitive-Experiential Theory, which is the seminal book for me now. Get it from Hamilton Booksellers, if they still have it, to save a few bucks.

Adjusted American Normal Neuroses in the Individual and Society Snell Putney Gail J Putney 9780060900953 Books Reviews

I read this book in 1980 and it helped consolodate my thinking. It provided the basis for the way I now understand human behavior.
Every once in a while an academic who has an understanding that is profound seeks to write a book that is accessable. Unfortunatley, most of the time academics seek to obfuscate (See the work of Bernard McGrane for more on academic absurdity)
In any case, I think this is a great book. The explaination of the seeds and nature of prejudice is simple, yet profound. I think that there is a chance that if you read this book you will have significantly more insight into how your feelings can co-opt your thinking resulting in destructive and neurotic behavior. It is the most readable psych book I have ever read.
NORMAL NEUROSIS helped me during the most difficult time in my life. I still have 2 ragged copies. Like Snell Putney, I also went to the same psychiatrist. He was Dr. G.A. Bob Young. His insights in 1965 were very insightful and was out of the boudaries of Behaviorism and Freudianism. Young theorized that humans are active creatures in which there is a stimuli in the
person and another in the environment. One projects onto the environment what they believe they see and then act. Humans act rather than react. Putney uses this over and over in "indirect acceptance." In other words, Young brought together inadvertently the Third Force psychology and symbolic interaction sociology. He asked me to write for him, but I didn't have the courage. He did write some material on mimeograph papers. I was out to his home after he lost his eyesight and had psycholtherapy there. Both he and his wife, had a beautiful bedroom with special lighting and water fountain. Young was an MD and far ahead of his time. Putney is the populizer for Young. Although a bit dated, it is still a wonderful addition to one's library. I miss Young and I was pleased that Putney did such a fine social science bestseller. Prof. Joel Snell, Emeritus, Kirkwood College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
First read it in the 70's at the of my recommendation of my psychologist friend. Still holds true after all these years. Helpful in understanding oneself and others behavior. Bought it for my grandchildren and myself.
This book was published in 1966 and yet it's a book that most Americans should read. Our mobile society is truly as the authors ellude to now in 2013. The neuroses seen in our society now is spoken of in this book, and it's source can be traced to the results of living in and growing up in a society such as ours.
well put but if youre reading this book you probably already know most of this...and good luck getting others to read it. highly recommend it if youre not sold already
I was introduced to this book way back in high school and recently reacquired it now that I do some teaching on my own. Interesting and relevent this book is highly recommended for any level of psychology student from hobbyist to professional.
Classic book on self-defeating behaviors and hidden motivations. Good guide book for anyone wishing to escape self deception and mature at an egoic level.
