Karen Traviss does a good job with characterization, in the sense that they sound and feel like the characters we're used to, but would they do what she has them do? This book continues Jacen's descent into evil. Jacen doesn't realize he's descending into evil because he values order over all other considerations and imagines that this upcoming war will be "the war to end all wars," and that after it is won successfully, there will be eternal peace. Too bad his Kwisatz Haderach powers from the last book aren't very good (and, in fact, don't appear in this book, unless that's what they call "Force-walking into the future"). So far, I have no problems with the book.I also don't have a problem with Boba Fett in this book. His inclusion may seem arbitrary at first, but eventually he gets linked up with the rest of the plot. I also don't have a problem with the way he is portrayed, since all I know about him is what I've seen in the movies. If his character is different from earlier books, if he seems a little too soft, consider that he is in his 70's and he thinks he's going to die soon.
What drives me totally nuts is how Luke and Mara deal with what's happening with Jacen, which is to say, THEY DO NOTHING AT ALL! And they let him continue to train Ben. And Ben sits idly by (well, in the next room, but he can hear what's going on) while Jacen (spoiler deleted, but other reviewers have mentioned it). And Han, Leia, and Jaina find out about it, and do nothing, except shun him. And Boba Fett laughs cynically all the way to the bank. (Okay, maybe not laughs.) Now I suppose this this is one of those plot points that is handed down to her from above. Well, in that case, I'm punishing the Great Plotmaster (which is not Lucas, I understand) and not Karen with three stars.
A book which would have been rated 4 stars gets 1.5 stars subtracted from it from major character stupidity required by the externally imposed plot, and rounded up to 3 stars because I'm feeling generous.

I used to enjoy the Star Wars tapes and then some of the cds, because, even in sets, the plot line finally was finished, the saga told. In the last few years, I find these stories with our familiar characters full of plotting and adventure, but with no real conclusion to the story--leaving me 'hanging', and, of course, with the writer's hope that I buy the next offering. I guess I am growing tired of this evolution of the sci-fi Star Wars genre.
Of "Bloodlines" in particular, we see Boba Fett as a poor, misguided, dying, bounty hunter and assassin, aiming for the last blood money...then he gets involved with Han Solo...and Jacen Solo has taken Cousin Ben under his wing, and the convolutions begin. Not too bad a plot, but, like I say, I feel left hanging for the next 'buy'. I also really don't have any empathy for ole Boba who has spent a lifetime amassing money by killing and destroying.. For a good read, try these Star Wars paperback
Tales from Jabba's Palace(Star Wars.)or Heir to the Empire (Star Wars The Thrawn Trilogy, Vol. 1)
There is a lot of hate or dislike for this series and book. Reading jacen's slow descent to the dark side is beautifully painful.
Although I don't understand how Mara has changed so much. She should be ripping her son away from Jacen. Luke should be the one trying to find excuses for Jacen's behavior. I personally think Luke and Mara are poorly written so far in this series.
Boba fett. I havent read anything on fett. I don't understand the popularity around the character. Although after this book I'm starting to get it. He has incredible depth. If you love Boba buy this book. If you're on the fence like I was give it a chance.
This book was a bittersweet read because of the choices of Jacen Solo. I felt like a bystander in the back of his mind watching his choices. Learning about the humanity of Boba Fett was interesting, it was like seeing him without the helmet for the first time. Overall, this book was a good read just like the other books in the series.
Back when I read and reviewed "Betrayal", I was unsure if I would continue on with the series. Having decided to re-read "Betrayal", although my feelings are still mixed on that particular book, I've decided to continue with this series, and I found this one to be very good, it drew me in and was hard to put down. And plenty of action, to boot. I'm on to "Tempest now,and can't wait to see where it all goes from here.
Bloodlines by Karen Traviss is the follow-up to Aaron Allston’s Betrayal, the book that began the nine-book series Legacy of the Force. Throughout this series, three authors will be taking turns writing the books. It should be interesting. Bloodlines was an entertaining read. It expanded on what we learned from Betrayal, and it introduced several new storylines.
The character who kind of came out of nowhere to play a major role in Bloodlines was our old friend Boba Fett, bounty hunter and Mandalorian. We learn more about Fett in this book than ever before. We learn he has serious health problems, and we now know more about his family than ever before. He also takes the unusual step for him of acquiring a sidekick, the bounty hunter Mirta Gev.
Then there is Jacen Solo. The Dark Side continues to beckon to him, and he is clearly headed in that direction. He is now in charge of a quasi-military organization on Coruscant that has official responsibility for stopping terrorism on the planet. His apprentice Ben Skywalker continues to work with him willingly. Jacen’s actions are completely over the top in several cases, and comparisons to his grandfather Darth Vader abound. That is not good. Jacen’s actions and the changes in him continue to be heavily influenced by Lumiya
Karen Traviss is a good author, and Bloodlines is well worth reading.
